In her 20’s Jane Birkin captured French hearts as the epitome of London 60’s cool, famously entwined with one of France’s most important figures of French pop – Serge Gainsbourg. Yet Birkin’s talent far exceeded that wall-poster partnership, and since then she has led a prolific acting career in British and French cinema, and also as a singer.
It was an absolute pleasure for us to work with Jane at the Barbican in 2017, performing Serge Gainsbourg’s back catalogue, and not least because she deposited heartfelt hand-written messages to each of our 45 musicians on their music stands prior to the show.
